Albemarle CiderWorks - Apple Family Tree 3-Pack of Cider
Albemarle CiderWorks - Apple Family Tree 3-Pack of Cider
Take a fun trip through the family tree of some of the most revered cider apple varieties of earlier eras of American cider - still beloved to this day. Albemarle Ciderworks from Virginia makes some of our favorite ciders, and their focus is often on American cider apple varieties that they are passionate about preserving and promoting. This fun trio of ciders includes a bottle each of the Virginia Winesap originally from their region, and two seedling apple varieties that are descendants of the Virginia Winesap and that were later discovered in other parts of the country. All of them make for fantastic cider.
Did you know? Apples don't grow true to seed, meaning if you grow an apple tree from seed, the fruit grown on your tree is very unlikely to be the same variety of apple as the one you pulled the seed from. Cultivating and growing specific apple varieties requires grafting young scion wood from an existing tree onto the rootstock of another tree. Thus the appreciation we have for the work of orchardists and cidermakers who are intentional in their efforts to showcase beloved cider apple varieties that were nearly lost forever.
The Virginia Winesap apple is a classic cider variety from the mid-Atlantic region where Albemarle makes it's home. Winesap apples survived the decline of American cider because of its great culinary and dessert characteristics.
The Black Twig apple is a seedling of Winesap that originated in northeast Tennessee in the early 1800s. The has a nutty texture and the resultant cider has spicy notes that make it unique. In recent studies at Virginia Tech, the Black Twig apple has shown to have relatively high tannin levels when compared to other American cider varieties.
The Arkansas Black apple is a mildly tannic cider apple that is also a seedling descendant from the Virginia Winesap. Originally discovered in Benton County, Arkansas in the late 1800s, and named for it's very dark skin color when fully ripened.
