Greenwood Cider's Cosmic Crisp(TM) is made 100% from Washington grown Cosmic Crisp apples. The cider is off-dry and brimming with classic apple aroma and snappy lemony acidity.
Notes from a Pommelier (Erik) about this apple: Cosmic Crisp apples have created quite the craze since their release in 2019. The apple itself is the product of nearly 20 years of development from Washington State University's fruit tree breading program. WSU's research orchards in Central Washington bred the apple by crossing the Honeycrisp apple (to be crisp and juicy), and the Enterprise apple (for it's late season ripening and it's long storability). The result is a crisp and delicious apple that stores well and has become the favorite of many.
More than $10 million dollars were spent by the Washington State agricultural community in a marketing campaign to promote the "launch" of this apple variety. Named the Cosmic Crisp for branding purposes - the apple has trademark rights for it's name and licensing rights that prohibit anybody from growing it outside of the state of Washington. 2 Towns Cider of Oregon has the exclusive licensing rights to name & label any canned cider product as "Cosmic Crisp". Greenwood Cider has paid for the rights to name and label this bottle of cider as Cosmic Crisp. Other cider makers can use the apple of course - you'll find it listed by it's pre-marketing identifier of "WA 38" by other cideries.
I'm a very proud WSU alum and unapologetically defend anything WAZZU related. I have zero doubt that the Cosmic Crisp has netted my alma mater several much needed $Ms... Go Cougs ... but damn if I don't wish the Washington cider community could get a fraction of that support to help sell cider from far more interesting apple varieties! WSU's CAHNRS (College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences) and Food Science programs are responsible for several incredible, world-changing, and impactful innovations to the benefit of many. And the WSU Mt. Vernon Extension campus has a very impactful and important Cider Research & Education program. So this apple nerd and traditional cider enthusiast will let it slide that this apple became such a thing in the cider world.
This cider is delicious. It's refreshing, yet full of character, which is so on brand for Greenwood Cider! We've had other interesting Cosmic Crisp ciders as well. We're glad Greenwood made this single-varietal Cosmic Crisp and hope you enjoy and perhaps ponder which apple variety you want to try in a cider next.
