Staff Picks: Storie's Favorite Ciders Right Now (6-Pack)
My autumn staff picks include a mix of ciders from all over the U.S. that I've particularly enjoyed recently. I find each of these to be well-balanced ciders that generally pair well with rich foods that I lean towards in the fall season.
Pssst: The 12-bottle bundle includes both my picks and Erik's current staff picks and comes at an even bigger discount (basically a free cider if you buy both bundles).
1. Idol Cider House (OR) Cidre Rouge Coferment (750 mL) - A cider/wine coferment made from Geeveston Fanny apples cofermented with the skins of Oregon-grown Pinot Noir grapes. Great body and balance with notes of prominent notes of fresh apple juice and black cherry on the nose and palate. Finishes dry with lingering tannins from the Pinot Noir grape skins. |
2. Alma Cider (WA), Pomme Party (750 mL) - Made from a blend of pomme fruit - cider apples, dessert apples, perry pears, dessert pears, and quince - nicely balanced with the lovely quince aroma I adore and the funnest name. |
3. Wolfkin Cider - Sigrid Botanical Cider (500 mL) - Botanical cider infused with white spruce tips. Made with a base of dry cider made from foraged apples, rested on the white spruce needles for one month. This cider has just a touch of perceived sweetness with a light forest flavor from the young spruce tips. I don't often drink botanical flavored ciders, but I'm head over heels for the light spruce tip notes in this cider. (not pictured, as this replaced the Haykin Dolgo Crab that's now out of stock). |
4. South Hill Cider (NY), Porters Russet - Naturally I'm going to love a cider made from a blend of my two favorite cider apples - Porters Perfection and Golden Russet. Dry and sparkling, this cider is nicely balanced and bright with high acid, tight tannins, delicate bubbles, and a slightly bitter finish. |
5. Raging Cider (CA), Got Crabs, Too? (500 mL) - The 2nd iteration of this cider from Raging, and both versions have been favorites of mine. Made from a cofermentation of 33% Transcendent Crabapple, 34% Hyslop Crabapple, and 33% Hewes Crabapple. This cider is dry and tart with nice grippy tannins. |
6. Greenwood Cider (WA), Kingston Black (750 mL) - Kingston Black is one of those apples that expresses itself so differently from cider to cider. This one is made made from 100% Kingston Black apples grown by two orchards in Western Washington. Semi-dry with well-balanced acid and tannins, and notes of vanilla, brown sugar, and dried apples. |
