Rootwood Cider - Roxbury Russet Single Varietal (750 mL)
Rootwood Cider - Roxbury Russet Single Varietal (750 mL)
Rootwood's Roxbury Russet Cider is a single-varietal cider made from estate-grown Roxbury Russet apples. Rootwood Cider's estate orchard near Lake Chelan in Central Washington has been in Koenig the family for more than 100 years. They began making small batches of craft cider in 2015 using fruit from their own orchard, and started planting and grafting trees over to grow more cider specific apple varieties on the family farm - including this lovely Roxbury Russet.
One of America's oldest apples, the Roxbury Russet brings history into modern cider making. These heirloom apples are pressed and slowly fermented to highlight crisp acidity and subtle tannins. The result is a dry, structured cider with notes of orchard fruit, citrus peel, and a clean mineral finish.
About Roxbury Russet apples: Believed to be the oldest heirloom apple variety with North American origins, the Roxbury Russet dates back to the Colonial era. First discovered in the former town of Roxbury Massachusetts, southwest of Boston. When apples first came to North America, most European varieties just didn't cut it in the new climate. So as settlers moved westward, they got creative—planting seeds from European apples and other varieties, then propagating the ones that actually thrived locally. Lucky for us, apples don't grow true from seed, which meant all this experimentation led to some amazing new varieties. The Roxbury Russet is a perfect example of this happy accident. Beyond its historical significance, it also happens to have natural resistance to cedar apple rust and fireblight, two diseases that plague orchards in the eastern states.
